GoDaddy sucks

Blog

I am unable to express my anger, frustration and rage of the events of the last three days with respect to my company's domain name. So, in the interest of documenting it, here's the email I sent to a lawyer trying to find someone, nearly anyone at this point, to take my case.

I've spent the last couple days calling lawyers and referrals from lawyers and more referals from lawyers. GoDaddy, complicit in the error of my domain name being transferred away, as both ignored the issue, disavowed there is a problem with their system (there is: if I select "autorenew" and can't autoremew because no payment has been applied to the account, don't tell me the domain will autorenew: it's a simple as that).

I, at this moment, completely and utterly despise GoDaddy and will be transferring my domains away from them as soon as I find a registrar with DNS hosting and a decent interface. At this point, I don't care much about the cost.

Fuck GoDaddy.

Hmmmm.... maybe the anger is starting to show through.

Hi, Mr. Greenstein,

We talked briefly last night about my domain name dispute case. Thank you for taking my call so late in the day.

In January, I had transferred ownership of my company's domain name codingclan.com from my business partner's account at the registrar GoDaddy, to my account at GoDaddy. When doing so, I verified I had auto-renew on for the domain, so that the domain would automatically renew at the end of March when it came due. I have all of my domains on auto-renew so that I don't have to worry about renewing them. Given that I also have a valid credit card on file with GoDaddy, I assumed the domain would automatically renew.

I found out on Tuesday that not only had the domain not renewed, as GoDaddy's systems indicated it would when I logged in to look at my domains, but, when it expired, it was purchased by another company who had placed it on back order.

I am unable to find out the new company's name, as they have registered it under GoDaddy's Domain By Proxy service. When I called GoDaddy and the Domain by Proxy company, both refuse to give me information. Similarly, when I emailed the tech contact's email address listed in the domain's new whois information, I receive no answer.

The new owners of the codingclan.com domain name scraped my site before they transferred the domain to their servers. They have my company information, and company logo on their new site. They are receiving email into my old accounts, essentially impersonating me and my company.

I would like my domain name back.

I would like to begin a domain dispute. Their actions of impersonating me by displaying my site and company information without any indication they are not me, constitutes fraud.

I would like GoDaddy to fix the problem with their setup by which internal transfers of domains cannot be listed as 'auto-renew' unless they can actually autorenew. GoDaddy's current system does not apply the default payment method in an account to internally transferred domains, which is the loophole my domain fell into.

GoDaddy's system also does not display expiring domains which do not have a default payment method assigned to them. To find default payments requires numerous steps, buried in the site, which a technician on a 45 minute phone call had to show me where the listing, and I've been using their services for over five years.

Is this a case you are willing to take? If not, can you refer me to someone who can.

Thanks.

Kitt.

Updated July 26th, 2009: Here is what happened to my domain name:

I transferred my company's domain name from my business partner's GoDaddy account to my GoDaddy account with an internal transfer in January, as my business partner had left the company. When I made this transfer, I made sure the domain name had automatic renewal on. My credit card on file does not expire until next year, so I figured I was all set.

After receiving an email that the domain was about to expire, I logged in to my GoDaddy and verified the domain was on automatic renewal. It was, so I logged back out and didn't worry about it. Recent calls to GoDaddy support confirm that I logged in and viewed my domain page, and would have seen the domain was set to automatically renew.

On May 5th, I was informed by a colleague that email to my business email account was bouncing. Turns out, my domain was NOT renewed, and here's why:

GoDaddy has a bug in their system where INTERNALLY TRANSFERRED DOMAINS DO NOT HAVE SAVED PAYMENT TYPES (CREDIT CARD ON FILE) AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED TO THEM

Despite the fact the GoDaddy website TOLD ME MY DOMAIN WOULD AUTOMATICALLY RENEW, it did not.

When I didn't manually renew the domain name (why would I? it was set to automatically renew), GODADDY SOLD IT AT AUCTION for over $500. This is $500 of profit for GoDaddy ON THE BUG IN THEIR SYSTEM.

It turns out, the person who bought the domain at the auction, scraped my site before transferring the domain. My company's logo, phone number and (this is critical) company email address are currently on the website of the domain name I lost. The new registrant is committing a copyright violation, a trademark violation and fraud by impersonating my company. This scraping happens to be the only chance I'll get my company's domain name back, because of the fraud committed. My case is currently pending in the domain arbitration process that everyone agrees to when they register a domain.

Ideally, I'd like for the defendant to join me in a case to force GoDaddy to fix their system. I'd support a case where GoDaddy pays for my court costs, the defendant's court costs and his auction monies.

In the meantime, I'm looking for a new registrar. Given that I have over a hundred domain names (many as gifts to friends), my leaving will be a noticeable chunk of change. I expect GoDaddy to give me a call when I leave, the same way they annoyingly call to thank me for my business when I now manually renew all of my domains to prevent this error from happening again.

Did I say GoDaddy sucks? Sorry, I meant, GoDaddy FUCKING sucks.

Last month, my IIS7 hosting account at godaddy had this problem. I contacted with them but they did not solve it. I then canceled my IIS7 account and bought a new IIS6 hosting account. The problem was solved. But, now the problem happens again to my IIS6 account. My website cannot perform some of its tasks right now. I am not sure if I can spend more money with godaddy.

We all know that godaddy's support works just like the godaddy.com website does, and that is all marketing and sales with little or no help at all. If someone calls in with an issue that they don't know the answer for, they're first response is not to actually solve the problem but to convince the customer of some off the wall answer with hopes that he/she will believe them, and then upsell upsell upsell!!!

The fact is that I actually worked there for 2 1/2 years and I know exactly how things work there and I will explain. First, the rep gets a call and must resolve the issue in 30 minutes or less, otherwise looses commission for the entire pay period. Also, the rep has a daily quota to his, otherwise also looses commission for the entire pay period. The downfall here is that the rep goes through the same issues that the customers do. The have several numbers to call for different issues which they must first look up in a knowledge base, and then hope that the number that they found is the correct one. If the rep is confused about which department to call, he/she will contact either a sup or team lead and that sup or team lead then brushes the rep off by telling them to look in the knowledge base.

So here the confused rep sits, hoping that the number that he/she is calling is the correct department and when the contacted department gets on the phone, they try everything to brush it back onto the rep and if all fails, then your problem is escalated, other wise the rep is stuck in a loop of asking this qustion, hold, then asking that question, hold, and blah blah until the rep looks like a complete idiot. The reason that this happens is because the representatives are taught absolutely nothing and forced to learn everything from experience, which takes about 6 months to get efficient at everything. The problem there is that the average turn over rate for employees is probably less than that because godaddy fires, sexually harasses and treats employees like idiots.

So there you have it, a shitty support system with an even shittier company.

As far as I know they outsource their support to a low salary country. So when you call Godaddy support, you are probably speaking to someone abroad. Am not sure about this however. But I know 1 thing and that is that Godaddy sucks. More interesting info can be found at http://best-inexpensive-web-hosting.com/godaddy-sucks-scam

All of Go Daddy's support is in the USA.

Even with the double post, I'm so way leaving both of those comments up.

We had similar problems - several of our clients, sadly, are hosted with GoDaddy and one particular occasion with their tech support comes to mind - while trying to solve a problem with a web page (static HTML) not displaying correctly (in Chinese, for some dumb reason - even though the source is clearly in English) their tech support fed me such a line of BS I was choking by the end. First they tried to convince me that the page was in Chinese. Then they tried to say that it was because of a virus in the web page (a virus!!?? in a static HTML page!!??) and finally the rep told me that he was too busy and had a meeting to go to.

So, after reaming him, telling him that my client was losing money by the second and that he had no idea what he was talking about, I was transferred to another rep who, did, finally admit that they were having problems with one of their servers.

Hooray! Success! Until the next day when I received an email telling me that that rep was wrong, that there was nothing wrong with their service and that the problem was in our page (back to square one). It's funny - the same page running on our hosting company (lfchosting) shows the page in English (as it should be).

If you're with GoDaddy RUN!!!!!

Do not dismiss the fact that GoDaddy is not only one of the best domain registration companies, but also one of the largest web hosting companies and with one of the best ecommerce hosting plans in the market today. You have read the other GoDaddy reviews elsewhere. GoDaddy does what a hosting company should do. That is, GoDaddy actually answers their phones, replies to their emails, responds to live chat requests, doesn’t rip you off, and provides quality hosting. So among the millions of satisfied clients, surely they will be a few who disagree. Let us look at the numbers above.

Godaddy is really a cheat. Setting a domain to auto renew is a waste in godaddy. They wont auto renew a domain and wont intimate about the expiration of a domain. They will sell it to the back ordering clients. Dont believe godaddy at any cost. Lot other sincere hosting providers are their to provide good hosting at cheap rates, why to buy such a crap godaddys hosting. Godaddy sucks... Really sucks... They will give a proper reply to the customers. More over their site and the cpanel is worst it will be very slow to access and not at all user friendly. I am using godaddy for years. We people must teach them a lesson by protesting their hosting.

They did the same thing to me. I had 2 of my domains on auto-renew, but someone had backordered each of them so it seems they could make a little more money on the backorders than they can on the renewals (Only around $9 each) but apparently it is worth it to them. I had 4 domains listed with them and 2 were on auto-renew. I had given them a new email address and for some reason their system keeps reverting back to my Old email address, which is where they supposedly sent emails to let me know that these 2 domains were going to expire, even though they were on auto-renewal. So I am just out the domain names and one of them had a HUGE website set up on it, otherwise I probably would get over it a lot quicker, but my spouse put at least a hundred (100) hours into setting up this site on a domain, we no longer own.

The situation in the beginning of this thread sounds terrible. Really irritating. I use GoDaddy for several sites and I'm not the most technical person around. I'm more the creative type. But, hey, someone's got to do it. Anyway, I've had several issues and questions and apart from being on hold for 5 to 8 minutes, I always have had a great experience with them. They stay on the phone until the issue is resolved and if I need them to walk me through something, they do it without grumbling. At the end of the conversation, they usually bring up things I hadn't even thought of that further clarify the problem and solution for me. I hope I never experience what you did!

their interface annoys most

I left Godaddy because of a number of their policies, whether they are legal or not I know one thing they didn't work for me.

As far as them giving a damn when you leave, UNLIKELY!, I had 75 domains at one point and didn't hear a word from them.

I have gone through 3 or 4 web hosting companies, none terrific but so far better than what Godaddy was Especially on a customer service level!

I have been recently using a Web Hosting Company that all should at least take a look at, ESPECIALLY if you use Autoresponders, Video and conference rooms, this is the single greatest web hosting companies available for my needs, take a look and say GOOD BYE GODADDY!!!

I signed up for GoDaddy premium 3 days ago. Since then, I have been plagued from all kinds of problems. Firstly, they took many hours to activate a few subdomains. When asked further, they told me it 'could take up to 24 hours'. There are free web hosts that let you add subdomains instantly or less than five minutes! Secondly, I had to spend many hours trying to install applications using their 'Hosting Connection' service. I had to install, then after installation failed, install again, fail again, install again. What is wrong with GoDaddy?! When I emailed their customer support, they only got back to me after 7 hours. Other webhosts are cheaper, and have live chat support. Browsing both Godaddy and my sites hosted on Godaddy is very slow as well. Besides that, when I tried to register others domains, I kept getting the error message saying that the session has expired. Still the same after clearing all browsing history, cookies, etc and even restarting the computer and reinstalling Firefox, Internet explorer. Deceptive advertising.

It claims to support some functions but later tells you that you need to pay for it. It claims some bandwidth and space to be unlimited, but then secretly charge your credit card with the stealth of a ninja when you exceed their 'limits'. GoDaddy is a joke. They should spend more money on support staff rather than on Superbowl commercials. Otherwise, all the commercials in the world won't do them any good as customers like me flock to Bluehost, Hostgator, Namecheap and practically ever other host better than GoDaddy. Support is almost non-existant on Godaddy, something they should emphasize to all users, especially new ones. They will never ever admit they did anything wrong, as it is always your fault. They also have no money back guarantee or any other protection for customers. Customers are treated like dirt. Phone support? Rude customer service and expensive to call them from outside the US. What's worse is when you try to move to another host. Extortion at its best. Don't even get me started on their Domain Registration Protection. They will reveal all your personal information to anyone asking for it for any reason at all. Oh my god. They charge for everything, know nothing about managing hosting servers. Their administrative control panel sucks. One day it display as 2 domains, one day 4 domains, the other day 3 domains. Their control panel is a pain to use. I have a diploma in computer science and even I get confused using it. I have been developing websites for the last decade and thought I would give GoDaddy a shot. Big mistake. They don't have cPanel. They don't have many apps as a install option. Why the hell did I ever sign up for Godaddy? God bless me. They store your credit card information. All of it. And they bill you anytime they like. Fines are deducted without any warning. Even the police give you a warning before fines. Godaddy is the biggest crook/thief/looter on the internet.

Everyone should know about this. I wished I had. Godaddy really does not care about its customers. People who support GoDaddy have not seen their dark side yet. Godaddy thinks it can screw with its customers because they will have hundreds more signing up every minute. To all new customers considering GoDaddy: Don't. You will be making the biggest mistake of your life. Take my word for it, and if you don't, don't say nobody told you.

They rent your contact phone number to 900 telemarketers. They fight your transfer of YOUR domain name to another registrar, with 100 BULLSHIT reasons, until your domain expires- then they place a FOR SALE sign on your home page!!!! DON'T register your domain with godaddy.com...should say godildo.com!

We should start a Class Action Suit against these assholes...you know Bob Parsons is the little 'dick' who produce all those fucking pathetc software programs 20 years ago...like 'How Do You Use MS Word' What a limp dick!

GoDaddy stole my domains. They don't give a damn about their customers or the law. Brian Goble, from the Office of the President, has NO integrity whatsoever. He lied flat out in a response to the BBB and failed to provide the resolution he promised. He is a lying scumbag.

I totally agree! They stole my domain too! They're trying to sell it for $1,250! What the hell?

I could never figure out why GoDaddy always has a picture of a woman on their site. Even in the admin interface. Is this supposed to make up for the fact their interface is a total disaster and their service is as slow as balls?

Godaddy's private registration sucks, it is too expensive. They lured me in with free private registration

I already transferred most domains to 1-and-1.com, but was too lazy to timely transfer a few other ones. Well, let them auto-renew one more time

What a shock

4 year autorenewal. with private registration for another 4 years. a bunch of domains.

I called in and requested to turn it back to one year. They refused

Godaddy SUCKS

Go Daddy is trying to sell my own domain back to me for $1,250? They suck!
